The Harvard Medical School-Partners HealthCare Center for Genetics and Genomics (HPCGG) has established a national award, the William K. Bowes, Jr. Award in Medical Genetics, to recognize and honor annually an outstanding physician or scientist who is completing his or her training in the area of medical genetics, or a combined training program with medical genetics. The HPCGG believes that this national award, and the premier honor that it represents, gives critical visibility to the importance of genetics in the future of health care. The Award also highlights the critical need for and the exciting opportunities available to those who are pursuing or considering becoming a medical geneticist.
The William K. Bowes, Jr. Award in Medical Genetics consists of a cash award of $20,000 and a framed certificate. The recipient is responsible for any taxes on the Award.
Eligible candidates must have completed all of the official requirements for their training leading to board certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics in Clinical Genetics, Clinical Cytogenetics, Clinical Molecular Genetics, or Clinical Biochemical Genetics. Individuals in a joint training program with Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, or Molecular Genetic Pathology are also eligible. All such individuals who have completed the requirements within four years of nomination are eligible.
Candidates must have a proven record of academic accomplishments, exemplify excellence in their areas of specialty, and show exceptional promise and commitment for continued future leadership.
Evaluation of candidates will also be based on the extent to which they have contributed at national scientific meetings and have authored publications; have, through design, implementation and completion of an independent clinical project, advanced an area of laboratory diagnostics; and/or have demonstrated confidence and competence in all aspects of medical genetics, and have exceptional potential for directing a clinical diagnostic laboratory.
February 29, 2008 - deadline for nominees to submit their application package
Nominations may be made by any healthcare or scientific professional with whom the candidate has had extensive working experience. This may include, but need not be limited to, physicians, scientists or other healthcare professionals.
Those wishing to nominate a candidate are encouraged to do so by completing the on-line nomination form which may be
found at http://www.hpcgg.org/News/Bowes/award_nominate.jsp. Alternatively, a letter may be sent to the Award Committee identifying the candidate
and providing full contact information for the nominee.
Each nominee will be contacted by the Award Committee and told of his/her nomination. The nominee will then be responsible for assembling and providing to the Award Committee materials that detail why the nominee merits consideration. Two sealed letters of recommendation must be mailed directly to the Award Committee. These should address how the writer is familiar with the nominee, provide a description of the accomplishments of the nominee, and make a case for why the writer believes the candidate is suitable for the Award. The nominee must provide the Award Committee with his/her curriculum vitae and any other materials deemed worthy of review and consideration. The nominee also should provide a PDF of one published article he/she feels best represents his/her work.
The Award Committee will evaluate all eligible applicants and will choose the recipient of the award. The candidates will be notified of the decision. No written reports will be provided.
Review of candidates and final selection of the Award recipient will be made by a committee of nationally and internationally renowned scientists. (See the following list of committee membership.)

The Award will be presented at a black-tie dinner to be held in Boston on June 18, 2008. During the day of June 18th the recipient and one senior scientist will present grand rounds at the Center. The grand rounds presentation will be promoted at Harvard Medical School and throughout its affiliated hospitals, and will also be open to the public.
